Treatment of Knee Conditions

You’ve Just Injured Your Knee — What Next?

In the immediate aftermath of a knee injury, you should adopt the R.I.C.E. protocol to alleviate the pain and reduce inflammation and further damage:

  • Rest the affected knee and avoid unnecessary movement
  • Ice the affected area to prevent further pain and swelling
  • Compress the knee to prevent further swelling
  • Elevate the knee on a pillow to boost blood circulation

After R.I.C.E. has been done, it is recommended that you still get your knee properly examined by a doctor, because:

  • You may have missed more serious underlying problems that may exist
  • As with all injuries left untreated, they will worsen over time and become harder to treat
  • You may not know how to safely re-condition and strengthen your affected knee
